James Mulkey Owens, Jr. was born in Grapeland, Texas, on August 13, 1908. He went to work for the Texas Highway Department (now called the Texas Department of Transportation) in 1928, retiring 45 years later as the District Engineer responsible for construction and maintenance of all state traffic ways in the Austin District. In addition to his professional career Owens was dedicated to preserving the history of central Texas by researching, recording and restoring historic landmarks in Travis and adjoining counties. He pursued this goal as a local citizen and as a member of the Travis County Historical Commission. He built a recording devise that allowed him to record all local dedication ceremonies as each state-approved historical marker was dedicated and would create a bound volume that included a transcript of the ceremony, photographs and the research submitted for the historic designation. He was also a member of Kiwanis International, Barbed Wire Collectors Association and was active in the Tarrytown United Methodist Church. Owens' work in the community was recognized and among the many awards and recognitions he received was the Austin Board of Realtors "Most Worthy Citizen" in 1977 and Texas Barbed Wire Collectors Association "Barbarian of the Year" in 1974. - Birth*: James was born on 13 Aug 1908 at Grapeland, Houston County, TX.

Funeral services for R. A. (Bob) Parker were held at the graveside with interment following in the Parker Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, with Rev. A. Frank, pastor of the Grapeland Methodist circuit officiating, assisted by Rev. Frank E. Luker of Kirbyville.
Mr. Parker died in a Houston hospital Sunday morning where he was carried several days before for examination and treatment. He has been at the home of his brother in Lufkin several weeks, and had been in failing health for several months.
He was a native of New Prospect community, having been born there May 7, 1875, and resided there all of his life, with the exception of a year or two when he lived in Grapeland. Mr. Parker was well known in Elkhart and had many friends here.
He is servived by four sons, Leonard of Midway; R. A. Jr., J. B. and Sam of Grapeland; two daughters, Mrs. T. E. Hunter of Laredo, and Mrs. Mary Robertson of Palestine; nine grandchildren; two brothers,
S. R. Parker of Lufkin, Jim Parker of Palestine; two sisters, Mrs. Jim Owens of Richardson, Mrs. W. H. Whitescarver of Crockett. - Birth*: Robert was born on 7 May 1875 at Houston County, TX.

Leonard and Lillie moved to Shreveport, LA in the fall of 1927 and moved back to Houston County, TX in the summer of 1929. There he was employed at a glass factory. That same year they moved to Midway, Madison County, TX a few days before the big snow of 1929. There he farmed and ranched. He was one of the first farmers in the area to work his crops with a tractor.

James Nelson "Buddy" Parker Jr.
James Nelson "Buddy" Parker Jr. passed from this life to be with his Lord on December 1, 2012, at Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston after being struck by a car while crossing Dixie Drive on Thursday evening.
Buddy was born August 27, 1921, in Huntsville to James Nelson and Chloe Tilda Gray Parker.
After high school, he worked as a welder in Orange during WWII building ships. After the war, he worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad as a brakeman and then in their General Offices in Palestine before moving to Lake Jackson in 1956, where he worked at Dow Chemical until his retirement in 1982.
Buddy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to garden, play bridge, hunt, fish, and cook. In his younger years, he was a bowler and tennis player. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson. He valued education and pushed his daughters to make good grades and go to college. He wanted his daughters to be independent and self-sufficient, and he encouraged his wife to finish her college degree.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, James Nelson Parker Sr. and Chloe Tilda Gray Parker of Elkhart, TX; daughter, Joyce Louise Parker Tankersley of Ridgecrest, CA; and sisters, Maurice Smith of Houston and Dorothy June Farquhar of Corpus Christi.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Natalie Engelke Parker; daughter and son-in-law Frances and H.N. Bitter of Lake Jackson, and son-in-law Jim Tankersley of Ridgecrest, CA; five grandchildren, David Bitter of Lake Jackson, Dennis Tankersley and wife Krysta of Beaumont, CA, Jennifer Rickets and husband Cory of Ridgecrest, CA, Katie Tankersley of Chico, CA, and Ben Tankersley of San Jose, CA; and one great- grandson, David Parker Tankersley of Beaumont, CA.
An Irish Wake will be held at Wurst Haus on December 5, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., for friends of the family. Services will be held at Restwood Funeral Home on Thursday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Ben Townes, Benny Morgan, Butch Munnerlyn and Frank Novosad. Interment will follow on December 7 at Roselawn Cemetery in Palestine, TX, at 1:00 p.m.
Family has requested that contributions in memory of Mr. Parker be made to a charity of one's choice.
