  "In the 1860 and 1870 census Josephs wife's name is given as Mary, while Olive Knifong (her stepdaughter) gives her name as Polly. I am lead to believe that Polly was probably her middle name and also was the name she used with family and friends. Owen was probably her maiden name. Polly was a widow, Mrs. Mary Polly Owen White. She brought to the marriage a daughter of almost 4 years of age, Elizabeth who may have been adopted, as she used the Knifong name. Elizabeth died at 14, her stone is engraved, E.F. Knifong. In and interview for the Oregon Journal Sept 17 1930, Josephs daughter Olive 'Knifong' Hussey gave this account about Polly. "She and her husband started across the plains with their baby daughter. Her husband was driving a team for their keep. When he died on the plains, the family for whom he had been working didn't feel like taking his wife and baby on to Oregon for nothing, so they made them get out, saying that maybe she could walk on to Oregon with her baby or she might pick up a ride. She had no outfit, no money, and no way to come on to the Willamette Valley when she was abandoned, about half-way of the journey." "A man named Wooden saw Mrs. White, with her little baby, sitting beside the road, crying, so he stopped to see what was the matter. She told him she had been abandoned and had no money and no food. She told him that her husband's brother, Mr. White, lived at Salem, and that if she could get to Salem she could get enough money to pay for the rest of her trip across the plains. Mr. Wooden took her along with him to Salem and wouldn't charge her anything for it. Father met her in Salem and married her along about 1853 or 1854. She and father had four pairs of twins--that makes eight--plus a number of singles." In her will dated 28 Aug. 1895 she is known as "Polly Knifong" she died on 29th of April 1897 leaving no husband, child, or grandchild. She left half of her estate to two branches of the Methodist Episcople Church. The other half to her step children or their heirs, and Nora Newkirk and Nancy Henderson (Indiana possible relatives?) As an item of interest: Joseph's grand daughter Bessie H. Hussey (The daughter of Olive E. Knifong from his first marriage) married Harry Kershaw, who's family was prominent in Willamina, OR. The house built by Harry Kershaws father Dr. Andrew Kershaw is on the historical register. It has been restored and is now owned by Mr. Gary Wooden, a descendant of the Wooden who helped Mary get to Salem, where she later met and married Joseph."
