  • Biography*: Hazel Maxine Myers Everhart passed away peacefully Monday morning Dec. 31, 2012, at the age of 84 surrounded by loved ones at her home in Lexington after an extended illness.
    A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Lexington. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
    Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Sam Eugene Everhart Jr., father Carnie Myers, and mother Nellie Younts Myers. She is survived by her brother Bruce Myers (Nancy) of Cary, NC, daughters Jill Leonard (Andy), Billie Garrett (Rick), Tammy Yarborough, and Mary Spake (Carl). 13 grandchildren: Anna McCulloch (Webb), Matthew Leonard and fiancé Rachell, and Meredith Leonard; Zach Garrett; Amy DeRemer (Chris), Nathan Monk (Allison), Josh Monk, and Haley and Hannah Yarborough; and Dylan Bellendir (Adam), and Gavin, Job, and Garrett Spake. 7 great-grandchildren: Myers and Jack McCulloch; Maggie, Emma, and Sam DeRemer; Ellis Claire Monk; and Ellie Bellendir.
    Hazel was born June 23, 1928 in Lexington. She met the love of her life, Sam, at a very young age and the two eventually married on August 7th 1948. During this period the couple moved to Wilson, North Carolina where Sam attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and the two began a family, starting with daughters Jill and Billie. Hazel and Sam would later move back to Lexington where they added two more daughters to their family, Tammy and Mary. Hazel held a deep affection for children and spent many years in the child care profession, where she was revered for the care she provided. She taught Sunday School for 15 years at First Baptist Church. She had a passion for cooking, always ready to prepare a hot meal for a sick friend or family member. Hazel was also an extremely gifted at seamstress, making clothes for her children and grandchildren. She loved taking trips to the beach with family, a tradition she carried on even in her later years. Hazel was a natural caregiver, always concerned about the well-being of her husband and family.
    Hazel’s family would like to thank Melinda Farabee, Nikki Hicks, Nola Fountain, Rhonda Davis, and all the support staff from Hospice of Davidson County for all their loving care, support, and compassion.     Sam Eugene Everhart Jr.

    The line was cast, Sam bit the hook and went to be with the Lord. Sam Eugene Everhart Jr., 85, of Lexington, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, surrounded by his loved ones and his beloved golden retriever, Belle.
    A celebration of Sam’s life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Lexington.
    The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
    Sam was preceded in death by his father, Sam E. Everhart Sr., mother Maude Bullaboy Everhart and sisters Sue Carol Byrd and Betty Jo Kirk.
    He is survived by his wife, Hazel; brother Kenneth Everhart; daughters Jill Leonard (Andy), Billie Garrett (Rick), Tammy Yarborough and Mary Spake (Carl); 13 grandchildren, Anna McCulloch (Webb), Matthew Leonard and fiancee Rachell and Meredith Leonard, Zach Garrett, Amy DeRemer (Chris), Nathan Monk (Allison), Josh Monk, Haley and Hannah Yarborough, Dylan Bellendir (Adam) and Gavin, Job and Garrett Spake; and seven great-grandchildren, Myers and Jack McCulloch, Maggie, Emma and Sam DeRemer, Ellis Claire Monk and Ellie Bellendir.
    Sam was born March 13, 1927, in Lexington. While attending Lexington Senior High School, Sam enlisted in World War II and served as a corporal in the United States Army. He was awarded the Asia-Pacific Theater Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Occupational Medal, Japan. After returning from Okinawa and completing high school, Sam attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) where he played football, a sport at which he was very skilled. Although he was blessed with four daughters, his passion for football led him to coaching VFW teams for many years. A hard-working man, Sam was a gifted painter and wallpaper contractor until his retirement. He had a lifelong passion for fishing, taking many family fishing trips to Ocracoke and eventually settling on High Rock Lake. A well-known man in the community, Sam was always thinking of others and in his later years spent his days driving around Lexington to visit old friends. Sam graced his family with a unique sense of humor and seemed to have a story for any situation. He spent his last months caring for his precious Hazel as she recovered from an extended illness.
