  Cora Iola Brady Ledbetter was the daughter of James Franklin Brady and Emma Cordelia Simmons Brady. She was born on February 18, 1902 in a one room log cabin. It was on a beautiful knoll at the foot of Rushy Branch in the Leatherwood Community in Habersham (now Stephens) County.
  
  Cora attended Canon’s Academy through the 6th grade then attended Tallulah Falls School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Eastanollee High School and received a scholarship to State Normal School (now the University of Georgia). There she earned a diploma in industrial arts in 1924. She immediately began teaching at Tallulah Industrial School where she served in many capacities including house mother, teacher of grades 1, 6, and 7, and director of plays composed by her and her students. An experienced genealogist as well as local historian she taught for 27 years in Habersham County, Clarkesville, and Tullulah Falls. Cora’s historical searches involved many sources - libraries, courthouses, state and national archives old deeds and wills. Many important facts came from personal interviews of native residents. Cora is a living source of history since much of the information she used came from her own real life experiences, but historical research writing and lecturing didn’t occupy all of her time. She collected more than 3 dozen varieties of wild flowers for her garden and she also made jelly out of sassafras and wood sorrel. She held a certificate in practical home nursing.
  
  Cora did much hand work - her lone star quilt is a prize production, and she also painted. Her doll collection afforded her a great deal of pleasure.
  
  During 1975 and 1976 she wrote over 40 historical articles for the Toccoa Record in celebration of the centennial. These articles ranged from Cherokees to Currahee Mountain, to family life in the 1800’s. Cora researched much of the information by traveling all over a 3 county area interviewing people first hand. She always carried a camera and often captured on film old barns donkeys and cemetery markers - she was a fine map maker and recorded locations and grave sites for her section of Cemetery’s in Stephens County History by Catherine Trogdon.
  
  She wrote and published her husbands family history entitled "Genealogy of the Family of John F. Clodfelter" in 1971. Cora was married to Henry Baxter Ledbetter for 48 years when he died in 1975. She has 2 daughters, Ruth Simmons of Clermont Ga. and Betty Jean Long of Midland City Ala. She has 4 grand and 7 great grandchildren. She has an avid interest in the Cherokee Indians because she discovered ancestors in her family - her great Grandmother was a Cherokee Indian. Cora lived in Tallulah Falls for 48 years and in Toccoa for another 23. At age 95 she resided in a nursing home in Gainesville, Ga. where she sang alto and continued to relate stories of her past.
  
  Cora died September 12, 1997 shortly after she saw a copy of her stories printed. We have also included her stories in our book Life Along The Middle Broad River.
  
  Although the memory fades, her stories are still about her life on Rushy Branch in Leatherwood Community. A relative recently commented that "people everywhere loved and appreciated her for her tireless work for so many years to get information for us that we would have never received any other way!"

  Cora Lola Brady Ledbetter, 95, of Clermont, died Friday, September 12, 1997.
  
  Born on Stephens County, she was a daughter of the late James Franklin and Emma Simmons Brady. She was a member of the Toccoa First United Methodist Church. She was a retired School teacher, having taught 30 years. at Tallulah Falls School and in the Habersham County Schools System.
  
  The funeral services were held Sunday from the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Robert Crawford and James Turpin officiating. Interment followed in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Stephens County.
  
  Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Simmons, Clermont; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jean and Herbert Long, Midland City, Ala; a brother, Homer Brady, Elberton; two sisters, Ophelia Maxwell and Mozelle Wilder, Elberton; four grandchildren;seven great-grandchildren; 30 nieces and nephews; and a number of great nieces and nephews.
