  • Biography*: Barbara Merritt, retired wife, mother and grandmother died on March 17, 2022. Barbara spent her final days on earth surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was preceded in death by her father Tracy Gilbert Beard Sr, as well as her brother Tracy Gilbert Beard Jr.

    Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 34 years Danny Merritt, two sons, Jody Thompson and Jeremy Thompson, daughter in law Latrice Tanner (Jeremy’s wife), four grand children Jonah Thompson, Noah Thompson, Annabelle Thompson, and Asa Thompson. She is also survived by her mother, Mabel Beard, and four sisters Brenda Brisson, Kay Ellison, Lorie Pearce, and Ginny Mire.

    Barbara was born September 27, 1954 to Mabel and Tracy Beard. She graduated from Tar Heel High School in 1972. Her early adult years were spent raising her two boys and running the family business. Barbara was fortunate enough to build her dream home where she would live out the rest of her years enjoying nature and all the animals she was so fond of. Barbara was well known for her excellent cooking and enjoyed years of entertaining family and friends. She was a lover of the outdoors and frequently vacationed in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee as well as the coast. As a grandmother she spent many late nights playing hide and go seek with all of her grandchildren. Barbara was adored and will be missed by many.

    Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 PM on Sunday March 20th, 2022 at Boles - Saint Pauls Funeral Home, 565 W. McLean Street, St. Pauls, NC 28384. A Graveside service will be at 3 PM on Monday March 21st, at the family graveyard located at the corner of Chickenfoot Rd and Shaw Mill Rd in St Pauls.

    Mrs. Johnson was a volunteer with the Bladen County Hospital for twenty years. She also volunteered at the Bladen Baptist Thrift Store in Clarkton.

    She is survived by her son, Jerry Ross Johnson.

  • Biography*: “Fred Donald Gritten, 71, Route 3, Kingman, died at 7 a.m. May 9, 1992 at University Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born November 6, 1920, at Montpelier, the son of Alva H. and Evelena Shoaf Gritten. He married Jean McFadden November 18, 1945 at Biloxi, Mississippi. She survives.

    He was a graduate of Kingman High School in 1939. He had lived in the Kingman area most of his life, having lived at Danville, Illinois, from 1946-1956. He attended Stringtown Church of God. He had been a crane operator for Esco Corp., retiring in 1985 after 33 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, Kingman Post American Legion #384, Iron Workers Union.

    Surviving, besides the wife, are: three sons, Fred Donald (Anne) Jr., Gritten, Locust Grove, Virginia; William Ray Gritten, Kingman; Bruce Eugene Gritten, Noblesville; a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Deborah) Uphoff, Franklin, Tennesee; a brother, Bernard (Nellie) Gritten, Covington; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Pastor Paul Kirby officiating. Burial will be in Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Stringtown Church of God.” – Fountain County Neighbor, Attica, Indiana, May 12, 1992.

    Bernard L. "Mutt" Gritten, 88, of Covington, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at The Waters of Covington.

    He was born July 7, 1924 in Harveysburg, Indiana, the son of Alva and Evalina Shoaf Gritten. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and a brother. He married Nellie P. Wilson on Aug. 4, 1946. She survives.

    He also is survived by two daughters, Suzanne (Mark) Burfield of Veedersburg, Indiana and Diane (David) Haehl of Shelbyville, Indiana; a son, Randy (Pam) Gritten of Crawfordsville, Indiana; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

    He served his country in World War II for almost three years.
    He was in Service Company of the 194th Glider Infantry of the 17th Airborne Division. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and crossed the Rhine River in a glider. He was later in the 82nd Airborne and was in the Victory Parade in New York. He drove a Jeep for Colonel Pierce.

    Daughter of William Thomas and Mary Anderson Wilson.
    Married Bernard "Mutt" Gritten August 4, 1946. He preceded her in death August 15, 2012.
    Survivors include daughters Susanne (Michael) Broyles and Diane (David) Haehl; son Randy (Pam) Gritten; sisters Julia McHenry and Rose Marie Curtis; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.
    She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers-in-law and older sister Bessie.

    1943 graduate of Kingman High School.

    Member of Stringtown Church of God where she actively took part in chili suppers and chicken noodle suppers and was a Sunday School teacher when she was younger.

    She loved worshiping the Lord, going to garage sales, visiting her friends, and she loved her family, friends, and her Stringtown Church family.

    Funeral services 1pm Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Stringtown Church of God, Covington, with Pastor Keith Klossner officiating.
    Visitation 11am until time of service.

    Memorial donations to the Stringtown Church of God building fund.
