  • Biography*: Funeral Services Held for Walter Ralph Applewhite

With the death of Walter Ralph Applewhite, at Tyler Holmes Hospital, on Wednesday, April 8th, Montgomery County lost one of her most highly respected and loved citizens. The Chamber of Commerce recognized him in 1976 as "Outstanding Montgomery Countian".

During the 92 years of his long and fruitful life, Mr. Applewhite touched the lives of thousands, first as a school teacher and superintendent, then later as a staunch member of Rotary International.

Born in Montgomery County March 29, 1889, he attended local schools, graduated from Millsap College in 1909, later receiving Master's Degree in Education from George Peabody College. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

After serving his country during World War I, he became a Charter Member of Nick T. Pegues Post of the American Legion.

The first schools he taught were those of Kilmichael and Winona. In 1912 he became superintendent of the Winona City Schools, where he remained until 1926.

Then, he was superintendent of the Agricultural High School at Benton, until he accepted the superintendency of New Albany City Schools for a period of four years. From 1932-1937, he was Superintendent of Webb-Swan Lake Schools.

For a short period of time he farmed in Montgomery County, then was elected County Superintendent of Education and served three separate terms in this capacity over a period of fifteen (15) years.

He was elected to the Order of the Rose, an honorary fraternity for educators. For many years he had been on the Board of Trustees of Holmes Junior College at Goodman and was serving as President of the Board at the time of his death.

He had, also, been employed for ten (10) years by the United States Department of Agriculture in Soil Conservation.

Ralph Applewhite is known far and near as "Mr. Rotarian of District 682." He was a Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International.

Though weak and frail during the last days of his life, his eyes still shone at the mere mention of "Rotary International". He first joined the organization more than fifty (50) years ago at New Albany, later becoming a member of the Winona Club. He was twice President here and recently was the recipient of a plaque from the Winona Club in appreciation of his years of service. He had fifteen (15) years perfect attendance.

Mr. Applewhite and his wife, the former Ruth Mitchell, whom he married in 1921, attended many Rotary International Conventions together. It was his keen pleasure to present to the presidents of Rotary Clubs from all over the world gavels which he made in his wood-working shop. He explained that these hand-turned and hand-polished gavels were made from choice Mississippi hardwoods, including cherry, walnut and cedar.

Truly, the Rotary motto, "Service above self, he profits most who serves best," was lived by this man, as he patterned his life by the 4-Way Test of Rotary.

Final services were conducted on Friday, April 10th, from his church, Moore Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had been on the Administrative Board and had taught the Volunteer Adult Class for twenty-five (25) years. The Rev, Gladwin Clark officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery with Lee Funeral Home in charge. His grandsons served as active pallbearers, with the Winona Rotary Club and the Holmes Junior College Board of Trustees as honorary pallbearers.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ruth Mitchell Applewhite of Winona; two daughters, Mrs. Mitchie Billingsley of Winona, and Mrs. Sara Jean Cartledge of Drew; one son, Joe Crawford Applewhite of Plano, Texas; seven grandsons, Dave Billingsley of Batesville; Ralph Billingsley of Columbus; Bill and John Billingsley of Winona; Walter Robert Applewhite of Carrollton, Texas, Joe Crawford Applewhite, Jr., of Tyler, Texas: James Byron Applewhite of San Augustine, Texas; and one granddaughter, Mrs. Rebecca Cartledge Araujo of Jackson: four great- grandsons and one brother, S. V. Applewhite of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
