ROSWELL: Sandra Ragan, 67, needlepoint wizard

    By HOLLY CRENSHAW

Sandra Ragan's rich, vibrant threads were her palette, and she used them with the bold sophistication of an abstract artist.
"She was absolutely amazing with her needlepoint and her color choices," said her friend of 20 years, Penny Boswinkle of Dunwoody, president of the Atlanta chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild. "I've never run into anyone with so natural a sense of color."
Mrs. Ragan and her late husband, Bryant T. Ragan, opened Dunwoody's Needle Accent in 1983, and until her retirement in 2000 she was a leading figure in the local needlepoint community, selling hard-to-find supplies, offering advice to customers and crafting her own distinctive designs.
"She was just really, really wonderful at it," said Ms. Boswinkle, who occasionally helped out in the shop. "She knew exactly what she was doing and was so innovative with her own designs."
Sandra Farris Ragan, 67, of Roswell died Sunday of a stroke. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at H.M. Patterson and Son, Canton Hill, which is in charge of arrangements.
Her store was so highly regarded that the wives of former Govs. George Busbee and Joe Frank Harris would shop there, said her daughter, Sandra Ragan of Roswell.
"She was so talented that people would pick out a canvas, and she could always choose just the right threads and stitches to enhance it," Ms. Ragan said.
A native Atlantan, Mrs. Ragan helped her late father, Milton Farris, with his successful campaigns for the Atlanta City Council and Fulton County Commission. While she was still in high school, she delivered speeches for him when he was busy with other campaign appearances.
Mrs. Ragan's interest in needlepoint developed in the late 1960s and early '70s, when she lived in South Korea, where her husband was assigned for six years as a vice president with Gulf Oil Marketing. While she was there, her daughter said, she reached out to impoverished people she met, helping a local woodcarver sell his work to support his family and using the winnings from her frequent bridge games to buy milk for orphans.
She amassed an extensive collection of Asian art, a vivid souvenir of her time in Korea. "Our house was like a museum," Ms. Ragan said.
After living in Pennsylvania and Houston and traveling extensively, Mrs. Ragan returned to her hometown with her husband after his retirement in 1982.
A passionate animal lover with six cats of her own, she spent her retirement years "falling in love with stray animals," her daughter said, finding good homes for as many as she could.
"She was a real free spirit at heart, a colorful person who liked eclectic ideas," Ms. Ragan said, recalling her mother's irreverent sense of humor and how her style of dress radically changed in the mid-1980s after a trip to Arizona.
"She had seemed very conservative when she left, but after two days she mailed back all of her clothing and returned really changed. She brought back these Gypsy skirts and flowing tops and could go to Renaissance Festival and look like she would fit in.
"I think she was tired of being in the normal housewife mold," she added. "She always said she would have loved to live in Haight-Ashbury, wearing face paint and dancing around. She swore she was born in the wrong era."
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Bryant Ragan of Colorado Springs, Colo; three brothers, Milton, William and Stuart Farris, all of Atlanta; and a sister, Janet Farris Boden of Atlanta.
Contributions can be made to the Good Mews Animal Shelter or the Crisis Resource Center.

    Valerie Ann Frazier Edmonds
Valerie entered this life on August 12, 1953 and was called to her eternal home on November 30, 2023.
She was the second child and daughter born to Junius and Dollie Frazier in Suffolk, VA. Valerie grew up in Suffolk, where she attended school, graduating with the Class of 1971 from John F. Kennedy High School. She also received an Associates Degree in Accounting from Kee Business College in Portsmouth, VA. While in high school, you could find Valerie strutting up and down the field in black and gold during football games as a majorette in the Wolverine Marching Band. Upon graduation she went to work for General Electric Television Assembly Plant. Valerie and her two children Karl and Shanee' resided in Northern Suffolk. While working at General Electric, she would meet her husband, Robert Edmonds, and together they shared 38 years of marriage. This union formed a blended family, and Valerie became a bonus mom to Robert Jr., Duane, and Jennifer.
Valerie accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized at East End Baptist Church. As a youth she was athletic and active in the Recreation Program at East End, as well as participating in the choir and serving as an usher. She later joined, and was a faithful member of St. Timothy Baptist Church in Suffolk. While there, she served in several ministries including finance as a Trustee, Sunday School teacher, Usher, and lending her angelic voice to the choir. Her love of children extended to serving many roles in the church's youth ministry.
Valerie loved being creative and it showed in her home decor and other crafting projects. Her creativity was on display when she worked as an associate for K-Mart, and was in charge of their Fashion Shows and displays.
Her love of children also played a part in her most beloved role, being "Ma" to her 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Her grandchildren loved being gathered at her home. For them, nothing compared to "Ma and Da's house." She was always there to support her grandkids through each life milestone, never missing graduations whether near or far, birthday parties, baby showers, and anything else they were celebrating. They all knew they could always count on her being in attendance.
Valerie was preceded in death by her father Junius and her older sister Debra. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 38 years, Robert Edmonds Sr., her mother Dollie Frazier, her children Karl Sr., Shanee', Robert Jr., Duane (Letitia), and Jennifer (William), her siblings Clemon Frazier ( Sabrena), Michael Frazier (Zelda), two brothers in law, Phillip Claude and Chris Edmonds, three sisters in law Tina Holland, Marion Edmonds, and Diane Edmonds, her grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
