    WHITEVILLE - Lamar Alison Walters, 78, died Friday.

    Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Whiteville, with burial in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Janie Jones Walters of Whiteville; one son, Douglas A. Walters of North Dakota; one daughter, Mrs. Zula Britt Hutchinson of Charleston, S.C; two sisters, Mrs. Mae W. (Peggy) Britt of Hallsboro, and Mrs. Angela W. Ward of Burlington; one brother, Colwin Walters of Orrum, N.C.

    Visitation will be held Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Gordon and Neta Callahan Walters. She was the widow of James Bryant McGougan, Jr. and Edwin Nathan Small, Jr. and preceded in death by her son, James Bryant McGougan, III.

    She was a graduate of Limestone College with a degree in Education. She taught at Bladenboro Primary. She enjoyed her years with the Town and Country Garden Club of Bladenboro and was a member of the Historic Wilmington Foundation for many years. May-Fair was one of her favorite projects.

    She is survived by a son, John Walters McGougan and wife, Debra; grandson, John Walters McGougan, Jr; sibling, Mary Gordon Walters and husband, Dr. Woodrow Batten of Smithfield, NC.

    Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 12 at 1pm at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

  • Biography*: G. Walters MD, 93 of Whiteville died Saturday October 24 at his home. He was the son of the late Hezekiah Grover Walters Sr and Grace Short Walters.He was preceded in death by his wife Ellen Martin Walters. Dr Walters was born in Whiteville in 1922. He attended Whiteville City Schools followed by college at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He attended medical school at The University of Maryland School of Medicine graduating in 1948. His surgical residency was at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md. where he met his wife to be Ellen Martin. They were married in 1949. He practiced surgery briefly in Roanoke. VA and Salisbury, N.C. before enteringthe US Navy. He was a Navy Surgeon stationed in Charleston, S.C. for 2 years. Hemoved back to his home town of Whiteville in 1956 and opened his surgical practice. He worked at Columbus County Hospital which later became Columbus Regional Heathcare System for 35 years until his retirement in 1991. Son Dr. Ron Walters joined the surgical practice in 1986. Dr H.G. Walters founded Walters Surgical Associates and held manyleadership positions at Columbus County Hospital. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Whiteville. He was one of the founders of Columbus National Bank and was extensively involved in Lake Waccamaw real estate, once owning a large percentage of what is now Lake Waccamaw State Park. He always fondly remembered growing up in the rural farmland of Columbus County with his sister Olene. He was known for his mild temperament, soft spoken nature, and surgical expertise. He was a wonderful father, husband, and physician, loved by many.
    Survivors include son Dr. Ronald M. Walters and wife Debra of Whiteville, daughters, Barbara Ellen Walters of Mobile, AI. and Dr. Grace Walters of Pittsburgh, Pa., and sister Olene Utley of Whiteville. Preferred Charities are Columbus Regional Healthcare Foundation, Dr. H.G . Walters Healthcare Scholarship at Southeastern Community College, and First Baptist Church in Whiteville.
    Funeral service will be Thursday, October 29,2015 at the First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Andrew Barnhill officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

  • Biography*: Whiteville : Mrs. Ellen Martin Walters, 91 of Whiteville died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the Columbus Regional Healthcare System. She was the daughter of the late Dr. William F. Martin and Clara Spicknall Martin and was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. William Martin, Jr. and sister, Jane Martin McCauley. Mrs. Walters was born in Baltimore , Md. In 1922 .
    In her teen Years ,she was very active in swimming and diving competition. She was active in the Girl Scouts where she attained the rank of Golden Eaglette, the highest rank in Girl Scouting at that time.
    During her somewhat later years she sang with the Baltimore Symphony . She graduated from the University of Maryland in 1943 and later worked as the head of Laboratory Services with the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md. where she met Dr.H.G. Walters where he was serving his residency, after graduating from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1948. They were married in 1949 and then moved to Whiteville in 1956. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was again very active in the Girl Scouts . She also helped organize the Waccamaw Sailing Club and loved children, cake decorating and working in her garden.
    Survivors include her huband of 64 years, Dr. H.G. Walters of the home; son; Dr. Ronald M. Walters and wife Debra of Whiteville, N.C; daughters, Dr. Grace Walters of Pittsburg, Pa. and Barbara Ellen Walters of Mobile, Alabama.
    Funeral service will be Friday, October 25,2013 at the First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Ron Hinson officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.
