• Biography*: JOHN KING HAWTHORN, of Evergreen, Alabama was a treasurer of Conecuh county. He was born near Bellville, May 24, 1831. He spent his youth in Conecuh and Monroe counties and received a fair education. When still a young man he went to Pascagoula, Mississippi, and engaged in lumbering, and later in steamboating in the Mobile and New Orleans trade. After one year in this business he became master of a boat and continued in that capacity for seven years, until the Civil war broke out, when he entered the Confederate service as a private in the Forty-fourth Alabama infantry. He took part in the first battle of Fredericksburg, but soon after contracted typhoid fever, which incapacitated him for several months. Later he served in a private capacity, in which he assisted in furnishing supplies to the Confederate government. At the close of the war he engaged in building the Louisville & Nashville trestle work, some two miles in length, between the Tensaw river and Mobile. After completing this work he went to Lake Charles, Louisiana and had charge of construction work on the Southern Pacific railroad. Later he returned to Conecuh county, Alabama and engaged in farming. This he continued for a number of years. In 1901 he was appointed treasurer of Conecuh county and he conducted the office with credit to himself and friends. On Sept. 21, 1861, he married SARAH ELIZABETH BURDEN, of Mobile, Alabama; she died in 1872. She was the daughter of JOHN BURDEN and SARAH E. BURDEN, the former of whom was a noted architect of Mobile. To this union was born a son, FRANK M. HAWTHORN, who became a traveling salesman for a New Orleans house. He resided at Biloxi, Mississippi in 1904. In 1880 MR.HAWTHORN married VALARIA P. JONES, daughter of GEORGE JONES and NANCY JONES of Covington county, Ala. To them was born one child, HENRY HAWTHORN, who is attended the State Agricultural college of Mississippi. The second wife died in 1883. On Dec. 7, 1886, MR. HAWTHORN took as his third wife MRS. LAURA PAGE, daughter of ABSALOM AUTRY and SARAH AUTREY, old and respected residents of Conecuh county. MR. and MRS. HAWTHORN were members of the Baptist church and MR. HAWTHORN stood high in the estimation of the citizens. In all his undertakings he has done his duty well. When he had completed his contract for building the Louisville & Nashville trestle he received letters from the chief engineer and superintendent of the railroad company highly complimenting him for his faithful service.
