Dr. Garland Emory Tipps

• Biography*: Occupation: Professor.
  
  Obituary:
  According to Dr. Garland Tipps, his 45-year association with ENMU was the longest of any professor. He retired in 1985 from teaching sociology and criminal justice for 31 years and later served as president of ENMU’s Council of Professors Emeriti for 14 years.
  
  In 1954, he began the sociology department under ENMU president Floyd Golden and in 1959 began the criminal justice department.
  
  Dr. Tipps recalls teaching extension courses every day, each semester – even in the summer – traveling to Hobbs, Roswell, and Cannon AFB, and getting home around midnight each night. He put his three children through college; two of whom went to ENMU and enrolled in his Marriage and Family class. Dr. Tipps said more than 24,000 students took the class during his 31 years as a sociology professor.
  
  Dr. Tipps remembers the last Marriage and Family class he taught in 1985 when the students took a bed sheet and wrote on it “Romantic Interlude”. Then the secretaries of liberal arts and the students signed their names. He’s held on to that sheet and the toy semi-truck his students got for him that day.
  
  Dr. Tipps held several jobs before becoming a teacher. He was an evangelistic singer, ran bulldozers, and served in the Air Force during WWII. He trained for a pilot’s position and was one of the five chosen for the job. Part of his duty was to patch bullet holes in the warplanes.
  
  In 1939, he taught in a two-room school in TN. Dr. Tipps went to school at Martin College on the GI Bill. He also attended George Peabody School in Nashville, TN, where he received BA, MA, and doctorate degrees. He taught history for five years at Gattis Jr. High School in Clovis, NM, before becoming assistant professor of sociology. After retiring, Dr. Tipps was named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus.
