William Ray Frederick 'Bill'

  • Biography*: Bill R. Frederick passed away on National Flag Day, Monday, June 14, 2010, at Midwest Regional Medical Center. A friend to all, Bill was generous and tireless in his personal service to God, his country, and the town of Jones, where he proudly established his family and home. Bill was devoted to his family, who is comforted knowing that he is reunited with his wife Ernestine and is now celebrating the moment with his beloved Lord and Savior.

Bill was born to E.C. and Elizabeth Frederick of Jones OK on May 5, 1920. He was a lifelong resident of Jones where he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Ernestine Beckerdite. Their union produced not only two loving daughters, but also a partnership in the operation and ownership of the Frederick Grocery and Mercantile Store. Later, he held positions with the Jones Post Office as Postmaster and Rural Letter Carrier.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and wife Ernestine. Bill is survived by his sisters Dorothy Jones and husband Claude, Carol Langley and husband Duane. Additionally, Bill is survived by daughters Gloria Plummer and husband Paul, Jochabeth Holder and husband Glenn; grandchildren Michele Gillentine and husband Scott, Scott Holder and wife Shari, Clay Holder and wife Amanda; 3 great-grandchildren, Ashley Prince, Lauren Holder, and William Holder. In addition to his family, Bill leaves behind a large group of friends including Velda Ruzycki.

A faithful citizen and patriot, he was active in and held leadership positions with the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The Fraternal Order of Freemasonry. He was a lifelong member of the Jones First United Methodist Church.

Bill was an avid pilot and flew his 1946 Luscombe tail dragger aircraft frequently. He retired from flight sometime after his 83rd birthday. He gained his love of flight through his service and experience during World War II, where he served with the 17th Army Air Corps in the South Pacific as a B-25 crew member.
During his Army Air Force Service, he flew in 72 combat missions targeting Japanese Air Force, Naval, and land operations. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for meritorious and extraordinary achievement, for actions on the night of December 26, 1944, when his aircraft and crew intercepted and participated in defeating a Japanese Naval Force preparing to attack U.S. forces on Mindoro Island, South Pacific. Flying through intense anti-aircraft fire, his aircraft, the Sticky Kitty, was credited with attacking below deck level and sinking a task force lead Japanese cruiser. His aircraft was one of only eight aircraft that were available to defend this island garrison and installation and flew repeated sorties during the night, resulting in a successful defense. The Distinguished Flying Cross is the U.S. military's highest aviation-specific award. As a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bill joined a special group of aviators which include Charles Lindbergh, Orville & Wilbur Wright, Commander Richard Byrd, Amelia Earhart, and a host of his World War II brothers in flight. Later in 1945, he received additional awards including four Oak-Leaf Clusters to his Distinguished Flying Cross and the U.S. Army Air Corps Air Medal.

Bill will be long remembered for his vitality, mechanical aptitude, and the U.S. currency $2 dollar bills he liked to distribute.
