  • Biography*: Alma Mae Combs Shoaf, 89 of Duke Street, Cooleemee, died on Saturday, April 18, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice. Born in Wilkes County on June 16, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Columbus and Laura Rinda McCrary Combs. She was retired from Cone Mills in 1981, where she was a re-inspector. Mrs. Shoaf was a member of First Baptist Church of Cooleemee. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Robert Shoaf, who she married on April 23, 1937.
    Mrs. Shoaf is survived by three daughters, Geraldine (Paul) Leatherman of Woodleaf, Glenda (Robert) Barnhardt and Kathy Corriher, both of Mocksville, eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 13 great great children, numerous nieces & nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shoaf was preceded in death by five sisters, Carrie Mayes, Pauline Pinkston, Viola Yates, Jettie Reiley, and Ruth Troutman; one brother, Sidney Everette Combs, and a grandson, Robert Lynn Leatherman.
    The service to celebrate Mrs. Shoaf's life was held on Tuesday, April 21 , at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, with Rev. Tommy Register officiating. The family received friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral hour at the church. Entombment followed at Rowan Memorial Park.
    For those who prefer, memorials may be made in Mrs. Shoaf's memory to the First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, 284 Marginal Street, Cooleemee, NC 27014, or to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

    MADISON - Harold Lloyd Shoaf, 91, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

    A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Woodland Cemetery, Madison.

    Mr. Shoaf was born December 30, 1919, in Davidson County, to the late Gerome Anderson Shoaf and Lydia Creason Shoaf. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of Madison United Methodist Church. Mr. Shoaf was a T.W.I.A. Pilot, auctioneer, owner of H. L. Shoaf Real Estate Company, FHA and VA appraiser.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by former wife, Orene Webster Shoaf, a brother, Samuel Shoaf and sister, Alene Jones.

    Survivors include three brothers, James Shoaf, Rev. Bill Shoaf and Rev. Kermit Shoaf, all of Mocksville; two sisters, Ruby Motley of Granite Quarry and Sadie Barnhardt, of Cooleemee; several nieces and nephews.

  • Biography*: MOCKSVILLE – Mrs. Sadie Bell Shoaf Barnhardt, 90, of Mocksville, went home to be with her Lord February 22, 2013. She was born March 31, 1922, to the late Gerome and Lydia Shoaf.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Turner Barnhardt; an infant daughter, Phyllis Elaine Barnhardt; a sister, Alene Jones; and two brothers, Samuel Shoaf and Harold Shoaf.

    She was a lifetime member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary for many years. It was her heart's desire to see the new building paid for. She was an active member of the Women's Support Group and the Prayers and Squares ministry, where she used her expert seamstress skills to make numerous prayer quilts. Sadie loved crafts of all kinds and made Santas and Angels from Reader's Digests, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, sock monkeys and baby quilts for her friends and family. She loved her collection of dolls and had a bedroom designated for their display. Sadie also made many unusual costumes for her cherished grandson, Tommy. She and "T" loved to spend time fishing at Curie Beach each fall.

    Sadie was a master weaver at Erwin/Burlington Industries Cotton Mill, where she worked and taught weaving until it closed. She later worked at the American Cafe in Mocksville, serving as manager for many years. Sadie made countless friends there, especially the coffee bunch, as she called them, who came in each morning to catch up and tell stories before starting their day.

    Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Tom Beaver of Mocksville; beloved grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Tommy and Kellie Beaver; a great-grandson, Jake Beaver, who was the apple of her eye, all of Greensboro; a sister, Ruby Motley; and brothers James (Helen) Shoaf, Kermit (Marie) Shoaf and Theodore (Bobbie) Shoaf.

    A celebration of her life will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24, at Jerusalem Baptist Church. The family will receive family and friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
