Jacob Walter Cowan Sowers

• Biography*: Jacob Walter Cowan Sowers, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Sowers of Statesville, N.C., was born October 28, 1879, and died at the Billingsly hospital March 25, 1902, of appendicitis, with which he had suffered ten days and for which an operation was performed the 24th, but was found to be too late. He was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, Statesville, October 29, 1890 of which he was a member at death.
  
  His funeral was the first at this church. He was a young man of many excellent qualities, and the well filled church attested the high esteem in which he was held and would manifest their sympathy for the father, mother, three brothers, four sisters and other dear ones who were sorely bereft by this untimely death.
  
  The funeral was rendered by the pastor, Miss Harbin at the organ, and Rev. J. H. Pressly offered prayer and made some appropriate remarks.
  The interment was at Oakwood, the City Cemetery. Everything was done for him that human judgment and skill could do, but to no avail. God saw best to take him away, and we have reasons to hope that our loss is his gain. May the great comforter of souls pour out the healing of His grace upon the lacerated hearts of dear ones. W.L.D.

• Biography*: Mr. Fred Alexander Treadway, 91, of Taylorsville, passed away Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Taylorsville House.
  
  Mr. Treadway was born October 18, 1924 in Wilkes County to the late Nick Treadway and Lou Sowers Treadway. Fred had worked in saw mills in the county in his younger years, had also worked as a night watchman, worked and sawed all the timbers to build; Russell Gap church in 1957 and Mt. View Church in 1982. As one of his many grandsons stated: Papa Fred Treadway was a saved man and a “Super Grandpa” that always put a smile on people’s faces, one of the “BEST” grandpa’s you could have.
  
  Fred also loved his family and planting his Kenny Beck potatoes “the only kind there was.”
  Including his parents, he was preceded in death by: the mother of his children, Mrs. Minnie Tedder Dingler; four bothers; four sisters; two daughters, Betty Tilley and Louise Shumate; a son, James Treadway; two grandsons, Larry Shumate and Melvin Smith; a granddaughter, Savonda Bumgarner and a son-in-law, Wayne Shumate.
  
  Those left to cherish his memory include: four daughters, Frances Brewer, Georgia Teague and husband, Dewitt, Jean Cline and husband, Lonnie all of Taylorsville, Barbara Dollinger and husband, Gerald, of Hiddenite; a brother, Buster Treadaway and wife, Evelyn, of Hiddenite; 20 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
  
  The funeral service will be 3:30 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2016 at Mt. View Baptist Church. Revs. Buster Treadaway and Nickey Treadway will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
  
  The family will receive friends from 2 – 3:30 p.m., prior to the service.

  She was born January 8, 1930 in Alexander County to the late Nick Treadaway and Lou Sowers Treadaway. She was a retired cook. She had worked at Shady Rest and Aquatic Knits. She was a member of Jesus Life Ministries in Wilkes County.
  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ned Watson and her second husband, Walter Minkwitz; a daughter, Kay Dyson; three sisters, Lidia Holder, Maude Clanton and Mary Ann Fortner and a brother, Rom Treadaway.
  Survivors include two daughters, Carol Simmons of Newton and Sally Bentley of Hiddenite; two sons, Tony Watson and Roger Watson both of Taylorsville; two brothers, Fred Treadaway of Taylorsville and the Rev. Buster Treadaway of Hiddenite; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
  The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Northside Baptist Church by the Revs. Buster Treadaway and Richard Owens. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
  The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
