  • Biography*: Obituary -
Samuel H. Walker, Jr., 70, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away on November 9, 2022 after a brave battle with cancer.

Sam was born on September 29, 1952 to Hayden and Hoppy Walker in Asheboro, NC. He had a wonderful childhood with his sister, Sally, and his parents that he was forever grateful for. After graduating from Meadowbrook High School in Richmond VA in 1970, Sam went on to study History at the University of Virginia during which time he met his partner for life, Anne.

After graduation, Sam landed his first job as a salesman for Valley Wheel in Roanoke, Va. In 1977 he and Anne wed and went on to have three children, Emily, Sam and Sara.

Sam's career led him to Atlanta, Ga where he eventually grew to be the Owner/President of Heavy Duty Manufacturing. He took the upmost pride in his work and the people that worked with him. It was with much pleasure that he was able to transition his company to his son, Sam III, this year.

Sam was determined to provide for the Walker family and give them the love and experiences he felt they deserved. They meant more to him than anything else in the world. He was incredibly proud of all his kids and Anne and always tried his best to support them in all ways.

Other than his success in business and his family, Sam was very proud of his and Anne's decision to purchase "The Farm" in Hendersonville, NC in 2011. The beautiful property was what he called his "greatest adventure" and his family is so thankful he had a place with so much peace & quiet – his favorite things.

Sam was also incredibly passionate about golf and could often be found on the course with his son and countless friends over the years.

Anyone who knew Sam knew that he was the most kind and compassionate father and husband a family could ask for. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Hoppy and Hayden Walker and his favorite dog, Tuck. Sam is survived by his wife, Anne, sister Sally (Doug), and daughters, Emily (Joey), Sara and his son, Sam (Kelli). He also leaves behind his four beloved grandchildren, Mary Hayden, Sam, Macon and Annie, as well as countless animals who find sanctuary on his treasured farm.

The family will hold a private ceremony at The Farm to honor Sam. A celebration of life will be held December 4, 2022 at the Country Club of Roswell in Roswell, Ga at 2pm.

  • Biography*: Elsie Myers Drane, 97, accepted her Angel Wings and took the hand of Jesus on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Highland Home in Ridgeland, MS. She was a native of Durant, MS and longtime resident of Cleveland, MS. She had been a resident of Ridgeland for 24 years.

Born July 13, 1919, she was the daughter of Charles William Myers, Sr and Sallie Weeks Myers of Durant. Her parents and four siblings preceded her in death.

Elsie graduated at Whitehaven, TN high school in 1937. She attended Hillman College in Clinton, MS and Blue Mountain College, Blue Mountain, MS and graduated at Delta State College, Cleveland, MS. At Hillman she was president of the freshman class. Hillman, originally Central Female Institute, was founded in 1853 and operated during and survived the Civil War and in 1942 was purchased by and became part of Mississippi College in Clinton.

At Blue Mountain Elsie was Defense Attorney for the Student Council and Vice President of the Baptist Student Union. She flew to Puerto Rico in 1943, during WWII to marry her childhood sweetheart who was stationed there as an Air Force officer, and she worked there at Borinquen Field Air Force Base as a secretarial supervisor for a year during the war. She was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Cleveland where she founded and taught at the church kindergarten. She was also a former member of Cleveland Woman’s Club and The Bolivar County Hospital Auxiliary.

Elsie taught first grade and retired from A.W. James Elementary, Drew, MS. She served as a hospital volunteer in Cleveland and at River Oaks, Flowood, MS for 13 years until she was in her nineties.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Colonel Richard Bankhead Drane of Cleveland.

Surviving Mrs. Drane are her son, Don Drane (Carol Ann) of Madison, MS, granddaughter Scottie Drane Ellis (Shane), of Hernando with children Austin and Cooper and grandson Richard W. Drane of D’Iberville, MS. Other family members include Richard Drane and his wife of South Carolina; their children Meredith, Margie, Barry and Emily and eight grandchildren of the Carolina Dranes and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Mother was a dedicated reader of the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the Jackson Daily News, a longtime fan of the puzzles, frequent contributor to Lydel Sims and Jack Sunn, and often chuckled at some of the obituaries. As her son, she would scold me if I did not put in her obituary that she told me right up to the end to mind my own business and stop tending to hers. One of her favorite quotes, when asked a question that was none of the questioner’s business was, “If you will forgive me for not answering the question, I will forgive you for asking it.” She would remind us all that it applies still.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. She would have appreciated being remembered with donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

  • Biography*: Larry and Madelyn Crain have a new address—their Heavenly home on the streets of gold where there is no sickness or sorrow. Larry and Madelyn passed away on Saturday, February 13th, 2021.
They are survived by their 3 children. 4 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Madelyn is survived by her 3 sisters. They both are survived by numerous nieces and nephews. They also leave behind many friends who they called family—their brothers and sisters in Christ. Madelyn was born on March 10th, 1930 in Spearsville, LA and was valedictorian of her high school. Larry and Madelyn were married on August 4th, 1950 and had just celebrated their 70th anniversary quietly due to the pandemic. They loved each other dearly. They loved their family, their God, and their church-Circle Baptist and then Foster Road Baptist. They were Circlelites and then in Joy Club. Their love for the church ran deep, and they served the Lord with all their hearts. Larry was ordained a deacon at Union Baptist Church in AR, where he and Madelyn were very active and supportive members of the church. They always loved to travel. As their family grew up, they spent a lot of time tent camping. As they got older, their love for traveling continued-not in a tent but in a RV. Several trips were made with dear friends. One time Pat, Adrian, and Matt were tent camping in Michigan when Pat looked up and said "Adrian, that looks like Mother and Daddy", and it was! That night everyone ended up sleeping in their trailer because it was raining "cats & dogs"! Their travels took them from the east coast to the west coast and from Canada down to Mexico. Larry was a World War II vet, once guarding Rudolph Hess in Spandau Prison, and then also involved with the occupation of Berlin and Berlin Airlift. He was called back to service during the Korean War. Larry worked at American Oil Refinery in El Dorado, AR and then moved the family to Baker in 1971. He was a process operator at Hoechst Celanese until retirement. He was a skilled carpenter and jack of all trades. Madelyn was an excellent cook, seamstress, and crocheted afghans and spreads. In her early years she attended business college in El Dorado before working as an office assistant in the El Dorado News-Times newspaper. For many years she worked as a tax preparer at Montgomery Ward in Baton Rouge.
