ELIZABETH WISHART

The inscription on Susan WISHART'S gravestone does not identify her by name, but only as "The Wife of W.B. Bowden".

The following was copied from an original letter sent from Susan
WISHART, of Lumberton, NC, to her first cousin, Giles Eli WISHART of Rockingham, NC, 18 July 1883. Susan was 18 years old at the time:

Lumberton, NC, July the 18th, 1883
to Mr. Giles E. Wishart, Rockingham

Dear Cousin,
A few words to you and this leaves us all well truly, hoping these few lines may find you the same. Nothing much to write you. I am just from Antioch.
(Note: The small community of Antioch, on the outskirts of Lumberton, was the site of the Wishart family farms). Every thing is running smooth down there I believe. Crops are looking good in our neighborhood. We haven't heard from father (Wellington Wishart) in over two weeks. I saw Clifton and Jamie Wishart today at Antioch, they are two fine looking boys. (Note: Clifton and Jamie,
Susan's first cousins, were sons of Col. Francis Marion Wishart who was murdered in 1872 in a rural area of Richmond County, NC, while in pursuit of the outlaw Lowry gang). I saw Zach and Kit Taylor today, they were both well and the children. (Note: Refers to Leticha Ann Wishart, daughter of Giles Wishart, and Leticha's husband, Zachariah Taylor. Leticha and Susan were first cousins, once removed).

Note: The remainder of the page was missing, but on a second page was the following poem Giles had requested from his cousin, Susan.

"Waiting My Darling for Thee"

"I've been waiting for more than an hour, love,
Yes, waiting and watching for thee,
While hoping and praying you'ld come, love,
and keep true your promise to me.
For you told me you'ld meet me this evening,
and listen to what I've to say.
For to speak the plain truth, I am certain,
I can't tell you all in one day."

"By the lilies that float down the river,
By the cowslips that grow on the beds,
By the roses that bloom in the forests,
I'm waiting my darling, for thee,
I'm waiting, yes, waiting,
I'm waiting my darling, for thee,
I'm waiting, yes, waiting,
I'm waiting my darling, for thee."

"For more than a year I have waited,
That promise from you to receive,
So surely you'll not break your word, love
and leave me your absence to grieve.
So I'll watch and I'll wait here still longer,
In hope of your coming this way,
When the dim, misty veil of the twilight
Has shut out the brightness of day."

Nine years later, at age 27, Susan WISHART married Whiteford
Bellamy BOWDEN of Wilmington, NC. She was the mother of Mary Emma BOWDEN, and grandmother of the compiler of this genealogy, Richard Bowden JONES Sr. Susan
died in 1902, at age 37.
The inscription on Susan WISHART's gravestone does not identify her by name, but only as "Wife of W.B. Bowden"; she is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery, Lumberton, NC. Her date of birth is given as 2 Jul as well as 7 Feb 1865.
She resided in 1870 at Wishart, Robeson County, NC. 1870 census. She resided in 1880 at Wishart, Robeson County, NC. 1880 census.
Whiteford Bellamy Bowden. Whiteford was born on 20 Aug 1845 at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. Whiteford died on 15 Mar 1903 at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC, at age 57. His body was interred at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. Oakdale Cemetery. Note: During the Civil War Whiteford BOWDEN was evacuated from Wilmington to Wilson, NC, where he was enrolled in a private academy. On 28 Jun 1861, at the age of 16 he slipped away to New Bern, NC, and enlisted in Co. F, 4th Regt. (Wilson Light Infantry) NC State Troops, CSA. On 19 October 1861, he was discharged by reason of being a minor. Whiteford BOWDEN is buried on the Bowden family lot lot in Oakdale Cemetery, however, his wife, Susan WISHART, is buried near her mother's grave in Hollywood Cemetery, Lumberton, NC. Whiteford BOWDEN was apparently named for Whiteford Smith, the Methodist minister who officiated at his baptism as there were no other members of the Bowden family with the given name of Whiteford.

Children of Susan Elizabeth5 Wishart and Whiteford Bellamy Bowden both born at Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC, were as follows:
