1830. The 1830 Davidson County, NC Census records two males in the age brackets of Valentine and young Jacob in #214 household which were 1 male under 5 years and 1 male between 20 and 30 years. Petition for Widow's Dower in Nov., 1834. On 14 Feb., 1835 she petitioned the Davidson County, NC Court Pleas and Quarter Session for a year's provisions. In Feb., 1835 she also petitioned for a Writ of Dower partitioning the real property of deceased husband Michael Koonts so as to gain her widow's dower rights in the property since he died interstate. In Aug., 1835 a Writ of Dower was issued and the property of Michael Koonts, deceased was divided among the seven surviving children of Michael and his first wife and the widow, Mary Koonts. The Writ reads as follows: State of No. Carolina, Davidson County, Court Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Feb. 1835. Mary Koonts vs David Koonts, Guardian of Michael, Henry, Jacob Koonts; David Koonts, George Koonts, Pegay Koonts, and Alex. Gubb [Grubb] and his wife Susana. Your Petitioner shows to your Worships that her husband Michael Koonts late of the County of Davidson, died leaving your petitioner, his relick and widow, seized and possesed of a tract of land adjoining lands of John Koonts, Christian Livengood, and others containing by estimation two hundred and sixty acres --- situate and being in the County afoursaid. Your petitioner prays your Worships that a writ issue to the Sheriff of said County commanding him to summon a jury of good and lawful men, unconnected with the parties by consanquinity or affinity to layoff and allot to your petitioner her dower in said tract of land and put her in possession thereof - and report to this Court what they shall do in the pemises - and that your Worships grant your petitioner such other relief as her case requires and duty bound. 2 SEP., 1833.
The records of First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Davidson County, NC, show that on 2 Sep., 1833, John and Mary Koontz were received for membership on examination. No date shows for their termination. Later in Dec., 1833, daughters Anna and Charity also joined the Presbyterian Church. John moved out from the Sandy Creek Lutheran Church and eventually joined the "Shouting Methodist" at Wesley Chapel. He and "Praying" Henry Sink had a conflict in beliefs, so John left Henry as the pillar of Sandy Creek Church.

John's second Will was dated 4 Jan., 1866, probated Aug. Term of Court, 1866, Will Book 2, page 342, Davidson County, NC. His second wife, Sarah, is named. He leaves $10.00 for upkeep of the Cemetery at Beulah Church. His common name was Chapel John.

He married Sevele Magdalena Sowers or Sauer before 1817 in Rowan County, NC. He married Sevele or Scivilla Magdalena? Magdelena Evans on 5 Apr 1835 in Davidson County, NC. He was not called "Sr." because his son died at a young age. He was called "Red House" for the red house in Reeds, NC and also the early name of Reeds, NC.

26 AUG., 1834.
On a letter dated 26 Aug., 1834 he wrote to his brother Philip living in Parke County, IN regarding the death of brother Michael's daughter Anna Maria in July of 1834, Michael requested that the letter be passed to Valentine Long. Part of the letter reads as follows: "Again I will here name another sad circumstance: Brother Michael's Daughter Mary departed this life, about the middle of July last. - Some time previous to her death, she had a child, which also died about two weeks after its mother.".

  He was in the Civil War, C.S.A., captured by Union forces at Cold Harbor, VA on 3 Jun., 1864, and held prisoner until 3 Jul., 1865, three months after the close of the Civil War. He was in the 48th NC Troops, Co. H. Rank - Private. In the 1870 Davidson County, NC Census, Kelin, age 27, Eliza J. age 21, and a son, C. L., age 2, were living with Kelin's parents in Boone Township. He was appointed administrator of his Aunt's Magdalena's (Mollie's) estate on 27 Sep., 1875. Between 19 Nov., 1878 (when they sold the last of their land) and the 1880 Census, Kelin, his wife and family moved to VA according to Douglas Koontz's book.
