He was a large landowner in what is now Conrad Hill Township, Davidson County, NC. The homeplace, located on a lovely knoll and surrounded with fruit trees, was still standing until about 1940. The location has been known by the grandchildren and others as the "Granny Place". He was a public minded citizen, and came widely known as Squire Henry Hedrick. The records show that he served a number of years as County Commissioner, and also as magistrate. In these positions he played an important part in the early development of Davidson County, NC. As magistrate he performed civil marriages and conducted certain types of trials. It is recalled that disputing parties would bring lawyers out from town, and that the trials would be held before Squire Hedrick in his home. Like many others of his ancestry, he was a member of Beck's Reformed Church. Not many years after his death, Hedrick's Grove Church was organized. Some of his children and grandchildren have been among the leaders in the work and development of the Hedrick's Grove Church. Others have become prominent leaders in churches elsewhere. The large farm was divided between the three surviving children, George Mathias Hedrick, Richard Eli Hedrick and Emily Hedrick (Regan), and is still owned by the descendants.

16. George Washington5 Hedrick , Sr. (Mary4 Conrad, Hans3 Conrath, Johann?2, Johann?1). George was born 26 Feb., 1829. He married Margaret Hedrick 'Sally' say 1849. They were first cousins. He married Jane? Margaret Williams. George died 26 Feb., 1918. His body was interred Hedrick's Grove Reformed Church in Davidson County, NC.
He grew up in the Hedrick's Grove community of Davidson County, NC, and in the house which is father had built. The house was still standing in 1963 and occupied by Mrs. Pearl Beck Workman. He spoke Deutsch German and taught it in school when he was a young man. The children of his first wife spoke Deutsch German when they were small. George worked as a bookkeeper at the Conrad Hill Mine while it was in operation. He liked to fish and hunt. He was a great politician and a civic minded citizen. He worked for better scholls and better education. Thelma Hedrick Anderson, his granddaughter, says she remembers seeing a picture of a hand with a finger pointing which read "George W. Hedrick for bonds, for better schools". The grandchildren remember him reading large text books and books on law. He served many years as Magistrate. He conducted some types of trials. His children told of hurrying in from fields to hear of trials. Sometimes he substituted for the doctor. He had a little knife gadget, which was called a "Bleeder" and when people were sick and thought they needed to be bled, he would go and bleed them. A couple of these "Bleeders" are still owned by (1963) two of grandchildren, Bruce and Tom Hedrick. George gave part of the land for the Hedrick's Grove Parsonage. His land joined this property and he was living here at the time of his death. After his death the old house was torn down and a new house built on the place by his youngest son, George W. Hedrick, Jr. The home is now owned (1963) by Bruce L. Hedrick, a grandson. There is still an old Deutsch German Bible in the family and it is owned by (1963) by Lillian Hedrick McCauley, a granddaughter. She has had it restored.
